Parent Message August 2021

Dear Redding Families,

I hope this summer finds you and your family healthy and safe.  As I reflect on this past year, I am extremely proud of the immeasurable achievements of our students and staff in light of the COVID backdrop. As we move forward together, Redding Schools will continue to advance its high-quality learning for all within its programs with persistent innovation and heartfelt service to our community.

Learning Continues
As we begin the year and ease into this fall, remember that it isn’t a beginning, but a continuation of the extensive learning that takes place throughout the year. Every school is full of activity, including advanced learning opportunities, robust co-curricular activities and projects that support growth and enhance the quality and safety of our schools.

This summer, we hosted a high-quality academic summer program and summer camps for our learners. Our Summer School, hosted at Juniper, was a great success and supported a great deal of fun and learning.  Science projects each week, one-on-one tutoring in reading and math, as well as tie-dye shirt making and ice cream fun.  We will host another Summer School next year in 2022.  Robotics camp at Juniper had 15 students from around the Redding School District who built their robot, problem-solved solutions, and programmed their innovations in order to overcome obstacles for the tournament on Friday.  This fun personal competition format was amazing to experience.   Juniper, Sequoia, and Turtle Bay schools will all have robotics clubs this coming school year as well as Sequoia having a full VEX Robotics course.   I cannot wait for the Robotics Camp again in the summer of 2022 and our annual Redding Ruckus VEX IQ Tournament in February 2022.  Band camp hosted 30 students who were able to hone their skills with personal instruction and practice.  Great chance for many to pick up a new instrument to learn.   The concerts at the end of the week said it all.   A fantastic musical opportunity for our families.

Sequoia’s new Music Studies Center is quickly nearing the completion date of January 2022.  Sequoia’s 2021-2022 schedule will include many new and exciting musical offerings this year (Piano Lab and Music Production to name a few) in preparation for the completion of the new music studies center.  Sequoia will truly be Redding’s premier music center for student learning.

Just as our students were highly engaged in numerous summer programs, our staff were focused on designing next steps for all of our programs.  Our Bilingual Spanish Dual Immersion program at Sycamore continues to grow and build biliteracy for our students. The implementation of Computer Science instruction at Manzanita, Juniper, Bonny View, and Sequoia is only getting better with Mr. Selke as the Computer Science instructor and a full Robotics course at Sequoia.  Cypress STEAM offerings are scheduled to continue its march to integration within the weekly curriculum.  Education in Redding Schools never stops in its growth for higher quality. Our goal is to encourage eager learners who achieve success.  The opportunity to engage in personal growth and learning throughout the year is giving our students a strong competitive advantage that will empower our collective success.  We will continue the integration of our Community Developed Portrait of a Graduate traits this year.  Thanks for your continued support.

2021-2022 School Year:  We want to serve your child this coming school year.  Please contact your child’s school for a conference if you are not sure which program your child is registered in or if you have any questions regarding your child’s education.  Give us the opportunity to serve your child.

Even with our current state mandated health requirements and protocols, we have so much to celebrate across our schools – none of which would be possible without the unwavering support of our community, including our parents, teachers and staff, business owners, elected officials and everyone who champions public education.  Keeping our students in schools learning and safe is always the goal.  With these health protocols in place, we will be able to open up for mentors, parent volunteers, Grandparent Foster Program, music, sports, and field trips this year.  It is through our strong partnership that we are transforming public education for our children and our community’s future.

In-Person Instruction Continues: Redding School District will carry on with In-Person Schooling five days per week for the 2021-2022 school year.  All of these guidelines will be revisited by CDPH in November 2021.

As required by California Department Public Health, the protective factors in place:

  • K-8 student/staff mask requirements for indoors remains in place - revisited in November 2021

  • Frequent hand washing/sanitizing

  • Classrooms w/HEPA Air Purifiers

  • Individual quarantining when masks aren’t used and/or they test positive

  • Contact school if your child is sick

  • School arrival 15 min. before school - breakfast served in cafeteria

  • Students report to classrooms unless they go to cafeteria first for breakfast

College Prep Academy Independent Study:  Redding School District’s preeminent Independent Study Homeschooling option is still available.  Some legislative changes now require opportunities for daily instructional contact with Kindergarten to third grade students as well as weekly contact with our older students. See the College Prep Academy website for more information.

Live Q & A Event: As we did last year, the Redding School District leaders will be holding a live Q & A event to make sure we can answer questions.  You must have a Google account to ask questions of the team online.  Otherwise you can watch it live without an account.

When: August 5, 2021 from 5pm to 6pm

This fall, your child’s school will be scheduling their annual parent engagement Back to School Nights to share the instructional programs and answer any questions. I hope to see everyone at one of these events so that we can personally thank you for everything that you do to support our students and schools. Together we are building a stronger future for our children and for the Redding community.

Sincerely,
Robert Adams
Superintendent, Redding School District
